Province of Davao del Norte
Davao del Norte is a province of the Philippines located in the Davao Region (Region XI) of Mindanao. Covering 3,422.61 km², it is composed of 8 municipalities, 3 component cities, and 223 barangays. The provincial capital and economic center is Tagum City. The province is known as the 'Banana Capital of the Philippines' because of its vast banana plantations, and it is also home to the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), a major tourist destination.
History
Davao del Norte, once part of the vast undivided province of Davao, was created on May 8, 1967 by Republic Act No. 4867, which divided the old Davao Province into Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. Originally, it included what are now Davao de Oro (formerly Compostela Valley) and IGACOS, until Compostela Valley became a separate province in 1998. Historically an agricultural hub producing rice, corn, coconut, and especially bananas, the province also grew through mid-20th century resettlement programs. Today, Tagum City serves as its political and economic center while Samal Island is a major tourism draw.
