Surigao del Norte

Ang Surigao del Norte (Filipino: Hilagang Surigao) ay isang lalawigan ng Pilipinas na matatagpuan sa rehiyon ng Caraga sa Mindanao. Lungsod ng Surigao ang kapital nito. Binubuo ang lalawigang tatlong pangunahing mga pulo — Pulo ng Dinagat, Pulo ng Siargao, at Pulo ng Bucas Grande — sa Dagat ng Pilipinas, at isang maliit na rehiyon sa pinakahilagang dulo ng pulo ng Mindanao na pinapaligiran ng Agusan del Norte, at Surigao del Sur sa timog.


HISTORY

Noong 1538, napuntahan ni Francisco de Casto, isang Portuges na mangagalugad, ang silangang baybayin ng Mindanao kung saan naroon ang Surigao del Norte at nakita niya ang lugar kung saan nakatira ang tribu ng Caraga na siyang pinaniniwalaang pinagmulan ng mga Taga Bisaya. Ang mga heswitang misyonaryo at dumating noong 1597 upang pangaralan ang mga tao sa Butuan ngunit kasama ang paghihirap at intermitenteng pag-unlad. Sumunod ang mga Augustinian Recollects at nagtayo ng parokya sa Tandag at Bislig noong 1642, seglar na mga pari ang naghuna bago dumating ang Benedictine na mga monghe noong 1893.

Surigao del Norte is a province located in the northeastern tip of Mindanao. It is bounded by Surigao del Sur on the south, Agusan del Norte on the southwest, and the Philippine Sea and Pacific Ocean on the east, while the Surigao Strait lies to its northwest, separating Mindanao from the Visayas islands of Leyte and Southern Leyte. The province is composed of a mainland section and several islands, including the famous Siargao Island and Bucas Grande. Surigao del Norte features a diverse landscape of coastal lowlands, offshore islands, and rugged mountains, with numerous bays and coves that make it a strategic gateway between Mindanao and the Visayas.
